The 10th Iranian-led International Nanotechnology Standard is published

20 June 2022

After several years of continuous efforts conducted by a working group under supervision of Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC), the tenth international Iran-led standard in nanotechnology "Nanotechnologies — Toxicity assessment and bioassimilation of manufactured nano-objects in suspension using the unicellular organism Tetrahymena sp." has finally been published.
This document provides a reliable and repeatable method for simultaneous assessment of both exposure and toxicity of manufactured nano-objects (MNOs) using Tetrahymena sp. The ingested, internalized material (MNOs) indicates aquatic exposure.
This document is intended to be used by all the centers working with nano(eco)toxicity of MNOs and capable of culturing of Tetrahymena sp. The method uses Tetrahymena sp. to assess exposure and effects of MNOs. In addition, the test can be used by centers (laboratories) interested in investigating the biological interaction of MNOs with living cells.
This method is applicable to nano-objects such as nanoparticles, nanofibres of certain size (in a µm size range), nanoplates, as well as their aggregates and agglomerates.
As the normal procedure in ISO/TC229, following the successful result of the ballot process of the initial proposal by 36 participating member countries, the team carried out extensive studies and took part in various face to face and web-based meetings with good number of international experts to reach consensus before moving to the final stage of development of the document.

This standard ( ISO/TS ۴۹۸۸:2022) is now available in the ISO website at www.iso.org.
